Emergency Cake – Bakery joke

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

A baker is just getting ready lock his front door of his bakery when a man rushes up. “I need to have a cake made right now!” he was yelling.

I’m sorry, but I was just closing up and I’ve dismissed my staff already. I’ve shut down my machines as well. I’m afraid you’ll have to come back tomorrow.” - the baker replied.

I can’t wait until tomorrow! It’s absolutely imperative that this cake be made right now!” – insists the man.

The baker is a nice guy, so he says, “All right, I’ll see what I can do.” He goes inside and turns all his appliances back on. He then approaches the counter and ties on his apron. “Okay, what is it you need?

The man takes out a sketch from his right pocket. It’s a very well drawn depiction of a cake. “It has to look just like this,” says the man. “Exactly one foot wide, one foot long, and six inches tall. White frosting, blue icing, and a red cursive ‘S‘ in the middle. Just like this.”

Somewhat startled, the baker ponders the sketch for a few moments and replies. “I think I can do that. It will be ready in about half an hour.

Half an hour!? That won’t do. I need this in fifteen minutes.” - the man exclaims.

Fifteen minutes? I’m not sure I can do that. I suppose I might be able to get it done that fast if I used some pre-made dough. It wouldn’t taste as good but…” – responds the baker

I don’t care. Just get to it, please,” blurts the man, while checking his watch frantically.

So the baker goes back and makes the cake. He works faster than he ever has before, and somehow produces the cake in just under fifteen minutes. He presents it to the man fresh out of the oven. “Will this be sufficient?” he asks.

The man takes a measuring tape from his pocket. He checks the length, width, and height very carefully. He then compares it to the sketch. Suddenly, a look of horror comes across his face. “No no! The ’s’ is the wrong shade of red! It has to be the same shade as the sketch. Oh, what will I do now?

Calm down, if the shade really is a problem I think I can re-ice it. It may take a few more minutes…” -  says the baker.

Can You?” asks the man anxiously. “Well please, get going!

So the baker quickly takes the cake back and puts on a new “S“. A few minutes later he brings it back to the visibly distraught man. “There you go. Is this what you were looking for?” he asks.

Once again the man scrutinizes the cake, checking every detail. He compares the shades of red, and this time decides they’re all right. “Okay, this is good. Can I pay you now.” – says the man quickly.

Of course,” says the baker, hastily readying the cash register. “Now, the boxes we have available are over here. Do you want to pick one out?”

Oh no, that won’t be necessary,” answers the man. “I’ll eat it here.”

Baking

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Baking is the technique of prolonged cooking of food by dry heat acting by convection, and not by radiation, normally in an oven. Sometimes baking is possible  in hot ashes, or on hot stones It is primarily used for the preparation of bread, cakes, pastries and pies, cookies, crackers and tarts. Such items are sometimes referred to as “baked goods“, and are usualy sold at a bakery or grocery store.

A person who prepares baked goods as a profession is called a baker. It is also used for the preparation of baked potatoes, baked apples, baked beans, some casseroles and pasta dishes such as lasagna, and various other foods, such as the pretzel.

Meat may also be baked, but this is usually reserved for meatloaf, smaller cuts of whole meats, and whole meats that contain stuffing or coating such as breadcrumbs or buttermilk batter.  Larger cuts prepared without stuffing or coating are more often roasted. Roasting is a similar process, using higher temperatures and shorter cooking times.

Baking can sometimes be combined with grilling to produce a hybrid barbecue variant, by using both methods simultaneously or one before the other, cooking twice. Baking is connected to barbecuing because the concept of the masonry oven is similar to that of a smoke pit.

The baking process does not require any fat to be used to cook in an oven but little bit of olive/corn oil is usually added into the process.

Bread is a staple food prepared basically by cooking/baking a dough of flour and water. Most of the time additional ingredients are used as well. Doughs are usually baked. In some cuisines breads are steamed, fried or baked on an unoiled skillet.

Following are very common ingredients used: salt, fat, yeast, baking soda. Leavening agents are very important in bread making process. Bread may contain other ingredients: sugar, egg, spice, fruit (such as raisins), nuts (such as walnuts), seeds (such as poppy seeds or sunflower seeds) or vegetables (such as onion or garlic).

Dating back to the Neolithic era bread is one of the oldest prepared foods. The development of leavened bread can probably also be traced to prehistoric times.
